When our rescue team first saw Bhola, we thought he was dead. Another elephant fatality on India's busy motorways. But then we saw some life still in his eyes, and we got to work to save his life. The elephant was hit by a speeding truck in the dead of night walking on a busy highway. Captive elephants don't belong on India’s busy streets, and I want it outlawed!

Elephant Bhola's owner made him walk on a dangerous, dark highway at night. The impact left the elephant clinging to life.

But that's not the only danger. Asphalt is scorching hot in the summer. It can reach 150-180f degrees (65-82c)! And if this wasn’t bad enough, streets are covered in broken glass, nails and other objects that can get embedded in an elephant’s feet.

Bhola’s tragic story is typical. Many of the elephants in the care of Wildlife SOS have poorly healed leg fractures from being struck by cars and trucks.

No elephant should be forced to walk on a busy highway.
